Needles, scanners and a missing last needle

A needle can travel inside a hay product. The developer explains that a Silo packages needles into hay wads, and that needles sold with products at the Hay Sell Stand return to the haystack. Clearing the visible pile and successfully collecting its needles are therefore different things.
Follow the products, not just the pile
In a September 13 developer reply, FindTheNeedleDev says that the Silo does not normally destroy a needle: it can leave inside a hay wad or another hay product. If that product goes straight to the sale point, the needle is sold and returned to the pile.
If you think a needle has passed through your factory:
- Read the status of machines holding or packaging material, especially the Silo.
- Follow the output from those machines toward the scanner and sale point.
- Check each branch, including routes that rejoin after your scanner.
- Watch a few products through the route to distinguish a working connection from a belt that merely passes nearby.

Use this overview to see why checking only one belt can miss part of a factory. It is an official promotional layout, not a blueprint for a guaranteed needle route.
Silo says a needle is waiting
In the same discussion, a player reported 44 Loose Straw, 1 Needle Waiting, with no further Silo output. Another player suggested adding enough hay to produce another wad. That is a community suggestion, not a developer-confirmed fix, and the displayed amount is from that player's case.
Before experimenting, back up your save. Do not dismantle the Silo as a guaranteed recovery method: another reply reported a needle-destruction warning when doing so. Stop if the game warns that your action will destroy something.
A needle was sold despite having a scanner
In a September 21 discussion, players suggested checking whether robotic arms could place material onto another reachable belt when the main belt was congested. Observe your own arms and nearby lines before rebuilding anything. If a product takes a side route, verify whether that route passes through a scanner too.
For a queue in front of a scanner, the automation guide covers the community suggestion of parallel scanning lanes. There is no verified universal machine count or guaranteed processing rate here.
Stuck at 5/6 with no hay left?
Players have reported this exact state. As checked on September 27, 2026, the linked reports do not contain a developer-confirmed general fix. The normal return-to-pile mechanism does not establish that every missing-needle bug resolves itself.
Keep your save. Record the needle count, remaining hay, any Silo status and your route through the scanners, then add those details to a relevant Steam discussion. Avoid deleting progress or dismantling the whole factory just to test a guess.
